Getting Started

Use the Simple Syllabus icon on your OKTA dashboard to access Simple Syllabus as a Syllabi designer/editor.


***After the semester courses are built in Blackboard, instructors will access Simple Syllabus from the Syllabus link provided in the Start Here module of each course.


Dashboard Overview (Time: 1:00)

  • View the master syllabi, CRN sections you are teaching, and approval requests from instructors.
  • Search by keyword and filter by semester, prefix, organization, and instructor.
  • Syllabi sorted by categories: Not Ready, To Do, Awaiting Approval, Completed.

Editing a Master Syllabus (Time: 4:30)

  • Syllabi appear in the To-Do column.
  • Click the Edit button.
  • Changes to the master syllabus will appear on every CRN section of that course (ex: ARTS1101).
  • Reset content returns the section or whole document to the original setting (blank).
  • The warning message at the bottom gives a checklist of sections needing information.
  • Help text on the right side details what info is needed in each section.
  • Open the course syllabus you created in Word based on the template provided by the CTL (with the yellow highlighting). 
  • Copy/paste from the Word Document to the Simple Syllabus document and format the course-level information in each of these sections:
    • Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
    • Required Textbooks
    • Required Materials
    • Required Software
    • Lab Management Plan/Procedures
    • Grade Distribution Categories and Weights
    • Work Ethics Grades
    • Student Enrollment/Participation Requirements
    • Program Policies
    • Course Policies
  • For anything that doesn’t apply to your program, mark that section as invisible (ex, Work Ethics Grades).
  • When you submit the master syllabus, your approver (program/department chair or dean) will be notified.

Approving Syllabi (Time: 17:05)

  • Listed in To Do column
  • Click the Review button to open the document
  • Review the information the instructor has added to their syllabus.
  • Make a note and ask the instructor to make the necessary changes. Approvers can also make changes if needed.
  • Approve / Reject syllabi.
    • Click the Approve button to approve and move the syllabi to the Completed column.
    • Choose the drop-down menu beside the Approve button to choose Reject and return the syllabi to the instructor for changes.
      • An internal comment is required for rejected syllabi.

How to get assistance (Time: 20:10)

  • You can use the yellow question mark in the lower left corner to send a support request to the CTL.
  • Use the Simple Syllabus Knowledge Base. Click the yellow question mark in the lower left corner and select the Visit the Knowledge Base link of the request page. You'll need to register using your ATC email address.
    • Search keywords or questions.
    • Simple Community to connect with others
    • Simple Watch includes videos about syllabus design
